Essay: "Fresh Air"

by Joseph Alvin Parrish
When God provides me the answer to my prayer...it's like a breath of fresh air. What a great privilege it is to pray...it's like a breath of fresh air. Instead of remaining in the problem we need to learn to pray our way out of it... it's like a breath of fresh air. This is the life we're living, and there is a direction that we must take. Your life can be headed in either two ways...there is the right way, and there is the wrong way. And so that leaves you with a choice to make. On a daily basis I am awakened each morning by my created, "God", my greatest responsibility lies in acknowledging him. My quality of life could be, and will be so much better, if only I acknowledge God. It's like a breath of fresh air. From him I receive inspiration, which moves me to want to share it with others. It's like a breath of fresh air. My God gives to me not so that I can be selfish and hoard it all for myself, but God entrusts inspiration to me, and God woos me to share my experience.

People often ask me here in the penitentiary, why are you always smiling, and I give to them the only explanation I know. I have a relationship with God through his only begotten son, Jesus Christ. God puts his joy into my heart and causes me to smile. We can't deny that we are held here against our will in a place that we would rather not be, but does that mean that we are supposed to allow our pitiful plight to affect our emotions, our demeanor? Here in prison the least little slight often affects our well-being, and peace of mind. But please allow me to put something fresh and invigorating upon your mind and that is-you don't have to live your life this way ever again. If you don't want to, however; it calls for you to make some different choices. How about starting today? If you're ready to start, then let's begin by encouraging ourselves in the Lord. I realize that to some of you, you're asking yourselves what in God's name am I talking about? We can begin right now by encouraging ourselves in the Lord. Sooner or later you'll come to find that what I say is true-- its like a breath of fresh air. So tell me when was the last time that you had a breath of fresh air? It's not found in a prison environment, however, you can receive it here, but it calls for you to seek it out. A breath of fresh air, it will never pass you by unnoticed. Once you have experienced it, you will not be content until you experience it again and again. A breath of fresh air, it becomes a quest for you. I thirst for you to search in a dry and barren land, I'm longing for your hand to guide me to a place where you can cleanse me with your rain and baptize me once again. I thirst for your oh Lord, I am waiting, let your river flow. Come fill my heart again, and quench my thirsty soul. I thirst for you----for your power, I thirst for you and your glorious "sanctuary"

Its like a breath of fresh air. I have come a long, long way from the man I used to be, my quality of life has improved. I do not worry as much as I used to, and that's because I encourage myself in my God. Put plain and simple, when I feel that my life's too hard, I go and have a talk with God. He's waiting for you, whoever you are, no matter where you are, no matter what you've done. He's committed to you.

He will give you that breath of fresh air that you need. Fresh air I need to keep on living, when life seems too much to bear. Life can be what you make it, when you talk to God in prayer. God will provide, if only you'll ask. Its like a breath of fresh air you'll want to last. Oh that feels so good and I want it time and time again. Right now its here, but later its gone. Where did it go, this is my brand new song. The Segovia unit here in Edinburg TX is down here in the valley. Right now this is home for me. About fifteen days ago we had to evacuate due to a hurricane warning. The whole entire Segovia unit was evacuated to the Connally unit in Kennedy TX. When we first arrived, we were housed in the prison unit gym. They have about six different gyms. It was about one hundred and fifty people to each gym and we slept on the gymnasium floor on prison mattresses, our mats were all bunched together like sardines. A breath of fresh air sure would have been appreciated by each and every one of us. Just imagine 150 men having to share three toilets, and three sinks, and two urinals. Like bunched in sardines, we were in need of a breath of fresh air. After two days had passed they loaded us all up on bluebirds and drove us back to our unit of assignment. Everyone was so glad, it was like a breath of fresh air.
