Essay: "Mind Games"

by Jody L. Johnson

They come to you unexpected. Preying on your mental weakness. Predators from a culture gone wild. You're new to the system, new to the game. You're told Life with no Parole. And it hurts but you keep your head up and chest out. All the while looking for a friend. Here they come offering candy, coffee, food, and camaraderie. Yeah, this is nice. It ain't so bad I might like it here. Opening yourself up to deep seeded emotions and pretending smiles. Late unfortunate circumstances being about a change as time passes. These friends ain't too friendly, they don't just give, and they take. Now you feel all alone pressured by the same environment you thought was paradise. And those demons are way too real. You seek help in other places and you're told the same things. I'll be there for you call me when you need me. But you call and you call and you call but nobody comes. So what do you do now you never had to make these choices before and it hurts. Are you ready to face anew world can you give up on life. Theses are the decisions you must make in the world they call a concrete jungle. But it's funny no one wants to take the blame when you fall victim to the mind game.
