Essay: "Neighbors"Back when I was still living on Oahu, I had many neighbors. My house was the third one going clockwise on our court. I am from Wahiawa, Hawaii, and was raised in a place called Whitmore; which is sandwiched by pineapple fields to the West and sugar cane to the East. The two houses before mine belonged to an Anglo Vietnamese household and their five children. The two oldest kids, Ronda and Jesse ended up joining the US air force, as did quite a few people in my tiny neighborhood. Next to them lived a Philippine family, and they were loud sometimes. They would always watch this show called Philippino beat, which is the equivalent to soul train but with Asians. They would blast music while it was on, and to see them dance was like watching an impending suicide. They also had a few fighting cocks that were pretty noisy in the morning needless to say. One good thing about our Philippine neighbor was that he would share food with us, and I just love to eat! Our family consisted of my step-father who was and still is an army ranger, my mom and six children. There was an Anglo family next to us, yet another military family. They had one child and would often put in for parties for our court. The family that lived in the middle was Portuguese, and they had two children. The daughter was three years younger than I and would follow me incessantly trying to convince me to introduce her to my coven. I would give her literature to read but that was the extent of our relationship. Next in line were my coven's High priest and priestess, Amber and Frank. They were both pale and red heads, and because they were eccentric they were the talk of the neighborhood. Amber initiated me into the craft in 1993, so she is one of my favorite neighbors. She also introduced me to the gothic scene, so she was very instrumental in my life. Amber had two cats, one kid named Gareth and a big coffin on her lanai in which she kept books in. I had two other neighbors in my court, but I did not have much of a relationship with them so I will not mention them in this writing. Before I go I will mention my neighbors in here. In 119 there is a little fat guy who resembles an obese rabbit, and has had strap infection multiple times. He has also had a few cell mates and all have moved out due to his uncleanliness. On the other hand in 112 my neighbors are an older African American guy who loves to dance, and a sort of peculiar fellow who looks inside my cell whenever he gets a chance. Here to neighbors good and bad!! |
