Essay: "Parole"by William Davis Parole
For most prisoners parole represents the light at the end of the tunnel... A ray of light in an often, otherwise dreary existence. In Texas at least, the winning of the lotto is an apt analogy, both in what the prize represents and the odds against it. As I waited on parole eligibility I saw others agonize as they waited for their answer. At this time I wondered about this. I considered them lucky to be at least eligible and waiting. Then my day came. I was set off. In time my day came again. Another set off. Now, I am again waiting, I must say with a bit less enthusiasm. The question is, what, when I do make parole? Will I, like a wise lotto winner invest my prize in the future? Or be like so many who squander their newfound fortune? That is a question all the incarcerated face. I will strive to remember the agonizing wait for parole and the disappointment. Once free I wish to remain so. |
