Man has been searching for a shortcut to power over his fellow man since before history began and he still hasn't found a ground of it. The best substitute for it, however, is to simply pull a lie out of your ass that convinces some poor shmoe that you're God, a prophet, a witch or some person that has ESP, clairvoyance, telekinesis, or some other type of super power. If the shmoe believes it, you can run them around like robots and make them do all kinds of stupid or nefarious things for you. But, you can't ride them too hard or they'll stop believing in your version of fairyland.

Also, you've got to consider the quality of your followers. Gullible people make more problems than they are worth. Ignorant people are even worse. The most effective armies are not the ones who die for a cause; the most effective armies are the ones who are smart and vote.

Give yourself a break and don't waste time looking for shortcuts to power. The best use of your valuable time is to devote it to detecting what is worth learning, first, and then learn it. Don't get sidetracked and derailed by shortcuts to power!
