Essay: "Loyalty"

by Gary Jimenez
Loyalty is a choice we make to somebody or something. And here in America we are a nation of associations so all of us are loyal to somebody or something in some form or fashion. We might be loyal to our employer, our family, our church or club. Sometimes these loyalties conflict with each other by demanding our time at the same time. Hence, loyalty is a choice we make.

Perhaps in a time far ago when Kings and religion forced their loyal upon us we had no choice. In those days you were loyal or else! You were beheaded, tortured, thrown into a dungeon or burned at the stake. Though in some parts of our world a tyrant might still rule by forcing loyalty. But in our part of this world our commitment is always at a crossroad.

It's that many commit themselves with the caprice of a tyrant who alternated between kindness and cruelty. Because we can never anticipate all of the possible consequences likely to occur during the courage of our commitment its no surprise that we find ourselves staring off into the distance and se how much greener the grass looks yonder. Does it mean we're being disloyal? No!

The first law of nature, in my opinion, is self-preservation sure as the strong prey on the weak. You have to be real with yourself first and foremost before you can be loyal to somebody or something. But, you must know what the grass is not always as green as it looks in yonder place and it only looks greener from afar. You have to be strong-minded and sometimes hard-hearted to be loyal.
