Essay: "My Family"

Well my family on the most basic level is very diverse, but the deeper you go the more diverse it gets. My so-called extended family is beyond different. I was born to an African-American father and a Hawaiian mother, so I was raised on the beautiful island of Oahu. I was raised by my mother and grandmother, not meeting my real father 'till age 13. My grandfather, who was Japanese, was the father figure in my life. Most of my family, except my mother, is pagan. I was raised with the freedom to choose my own spiritual path. I had so many great paths to choose from inside of my family, Shintoism, Zen Buddhism, and The Huna (Hawaiian Paganism). I was taught a lot by everyone putting in their knowledge. I got married at 20 and it only lasted a year. Even though our marriage failed, I got a beautiful little girl out of it. Now my extended family is a whole different situation. My most prominent is my pagan brothers and sisters all over the world. I love them like they were blood related. Another part of my family are the Gothic people in my scene back home and those I meet abroad. Because of our similar style of dress and lifestyle we have a connection. In a local gothic scene it is set up like a family. I love and care about all of my family members, but out of all of them my Wiccan family has looked out for me the most during my incarceration. For this I am very grateful. Before I end, I would like to mention the family I spent four years being a part of, the US military. To be more specific, the United States Air Force. Thank you for listening. Demetrius Ke Koa Harrington
