Essay: "My Family"

by Teddy Leslie
When I think of my family, I think of all the hard times that my parents endured. My mother and father separated when I was very young so I was raised by my mother. I often spoke to my father on the phone but rarely went to see him personally.

Over the years as I grew into a man, I was forced into the world with no father figure as a mentor, so I looked to my mother for guidance. I believe that is why I am so strong-willed.

As I got older I developed a relationship with my father. Ironically, it wasn't until I came to prison did I really have the chance to get to know him. I finally realize now what was going through his mind all these years.

From my experiences with the family structure I am adept to, I now encourage anyone who does not have strong family ties to at least try, and build the void. I have missed so much and I always wish that it could have been different. I will always feel blessed for my mother and the courage she had when she faced the world on her own, and was left to provide for us by herself. She will ever hold a special place with me.

My father is my father, I accept him now. I wait to one day have the chance to provide for my kids, I take this experience into mind and put it to good use in the world that I have grown to accept.

For my family provided me the wisdom and the understanding to know the true meaning of unconditional love...
