Essay: "Parole"

by Leon Combs
Parole

If you have never been on the 'inside,' then when you think of parole you may think of it as a set of programs to return those of us in here to the real world a little sooner for doing good and trying to improve ourselves. As for myself, I see it as a joke, a scam to get more money out of the state while really not doing much. I was 'granted parole' once...a whole three months before I would of gotten out anyway!!! I sit here and see grown men that have committed crimes as a kid. Since they have been here they have expanded their knowledge and skills, learned enough to pass basic college classes, got great typing skills, and learned a second-or third- language. They have, and still are bettering themselves and still get shot down by parole while the next guy, like myself that last time, who had not done anything to better myself was granted parole. This state's (Texas) whole parole system is a joke. Myself, I came back with a six-year sentence this time. Small time compared to others. I have refused parole. Let me spend this time to better myself like others have and when I get out I'll be all the way free and let one of these others that have been here get a shot at it. Giving me parole for 90n day is just filling a spot to make the 'status quo' that's not looking into it all and giving it any thought? That was a spot for parole that someone that has been here for years getting denied for non-sense reasons like their record as a juvenile, could have had. But they wasted it...It's all a waste. For me and my life--they can take their parole and keep it or give it to someone who really needs it. I refuse it. Besides, my interview was on an April Fools Day--probably was jinxed form the get go!
