Essay: "Racial Profiling"

by Larry Darmon
This is like stereotyping people. It is like putting people into categories. Here in the joint we have that a lot. There are little groups everywhere. I am in a group that likes everybody, no matter the color of their skin, their religious preference, or their sexual preference. No matter who they are, they are still people.

I have had cellies who hated other races and would go around and say "n... this and n... that." Finally I would have enough and I would tell him that I have enough hate in me and I don't want to add more. So they either move or would quit for a while and then start up again later.

But then there are those of other races who would put me down because of my skin. When I had done nothing wrong. There seems to be problems in all races. I think that there are a lot of reasons why there is racism. I think they get jealous. Maybe because one exceeds the other, or may have something the other wants.

Greed is another reason why we have racism. Some people think that they have to have it all. Popularity, wealth, anything that gives them power over others.

Power in prison can come in many different ways and with that power a person can get almost anything done. If a person can get other people to believe their racial comments this becomes power, but it can also get one hurt.

We don't need racism; we have had enough in our world. It's time for everyone to put down the differences of each other and start caring, sharing, and let each believe what they will.
