Essay: "Second Chance"

What is a second chance? Is it a chance to correct what went wrong the first time? If so, does that preclude me from ever getting a second chance even if my second chance appears? Then why try?

I believe every day that I wake up I've got a chance to amend whatever wrong I've done. Life doesn't stand still waiting for you to mend your mistakes. It is always moving forward. So we get to correct out wrongs even though they have already passed. I hear people say "This is your chance to change for the better Donald. If I accept this chance to change and I screw up do I lose? No, I don't think failing to change after being offered a second chance ends the individual's ability to change.

That's what gets me about parole boards. Where do they get their insight into when and individual has changed? I probably will never get another chance to show I have evolved into a different person in these first eight years, but it doesn't matter to me. For who knows the truth better than the individual who knows the truth. I am doing 75 years and every day I awake trying to change and seeking new ways to do it.

I was blind, I saw, I was blind again, I saw again, so no one should have the books closed on them forever because changes seem to strike as unpredictable as lightning. I guess you can see that I'm not sure about second chances. Hopefully I'll get a second chance again sometime in the future.
