Essay: "Favorite Trip"

by Vonderic Barlow

She provides me warmth and comfort in this cold and unforgiving world. She's like a Mother; like a Sister. She's my Flame; my Soul. I can't deny her love for me because she refuses to leave me by myself. She even cries for me when she sees me Struggling to survive.

Dear Wisdom,

Deep within every man I know you exist. I know because I've found you myself. I was once told by Knowledge, my Father and Brother, (in theme 'EXPECTATIONS' Dec. '05) that whenever I became cold that I should seek your protection. That was you I was speaking with in another theme "PRIDE' in Jan. '06. So, from theme to theme, I Struggle. This month I write on 'FAVORITE TRIP'. I want to dedicate this one to you, Wisdom, because the most exciting and favorite trip in my life turned into the most important trip in my life. I found you. Since I have Knowledge to assist me in my journey and you to comfort me I can embark on another trip. A journey toward Understanding. I know it will not be easy because I remember what you've whispered to me once before. You said, "Vonderic, you're Black. You will never receive anything in life for free. Everything that you will want to achieve you'll have to fight for it. And once you get it you'll have to fight to keep it." Remember that? (lol). I tried to resist be reminding you that I am of mixed heritage (white mother, black father). I tried to reason with you by informing you that it's impossible for me to fight for one group of people w/o everyone benefiting that's living under the same conditions. And with that, you simply smiled. Again, you said to fight, that you loved me and that I would never be alone.

I struggle.
